education

RHINO Contemporary Crafts Co., a non-profit, education-based artist cooperative, stimulates public awareness and appreciation of contemporary craft. RHINO sponsors outreach activities in the community; recent projects have included:

Operation Pumpkin

This annual event, co-sponsored with Children’s Hospital and The Shops at Canal Place, features a friendly pumpkin-carving competition among local surgeons as well as a RHINO-run children’s area for decorating masks.

KidSmart “Plate Project” Show

RHINO has showcased the student-artists’ work in a gallery opening and provided retail space as well. We also have done other fundraising auction events for the worthy partner non-profit.

Second Good Hope Baptist Church Summer Camp

RHINO provided six weeks of crafts instruction and materials to campers aged 5-17.

Lafitte Housing Development Summer Arts Workshop

RHINO provided an introduction to crafts to 65 children of the development in a 3-week program sonsored in conjunction with the Sojourner Truth Academy .

RHINO artist-volunteers operate a gallery on the Second Floor of The Shops at Canal Place. A visit to the gallery always offers the opportunity to meet one or more of the exhibiting artists and to learn about the inspirations, materials and techniques embodied in the works on display and for sale in the gallery.

Through the gallery, RHINO also provides emerging artists with hands-on experience in activities necessary to a successful gallery: installation and display of work, photographing art, advertising, public relations, bookkeeping, and presenting themselves and their artworks as well as the art work of fellow gallery artists to the public.
