“Art in a Box”, a curated national exhibit, will open soon at RHINO Gallery in Canal Place. Works by 34 artists showcase the box as an art object in collage, assemblage, and small sculpture. Crafted of wood, paper, paint, fiber, clay, metal, and film-making, these objects combine the austerity of Constructivism with the lively fantasy of Surrealism. Artists use discarded fragments of once-beautiful things, juxtaposed to evoke nostalgia or mystery with accents of sugar, surgical instruments, Mexican fortune telling cards, human hair, old photos, nails and bone .
Some pieces in the show are political or have topical themes; others present enigmatic images. One artist creates holograms that shock and disturb within an austere clay pot; another combines paint, sculpture and stop-motion animation in a boxed stage set of the last scene of “The Picture of Dorian Gray”, with an accompanying DVD showing the animation. Some boxes have removable wearable brooches as components of the mini-sculpture.
The exhibit opens on Thursday, October lst with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m.; the exhibit closes with a reception on Sunday, November 15th from 3 to 6 p.m.
